5 Early Signs of Knee Osteoarthritis You Shouldn’t Ignore

Knee osteoarthritis develops gradually, and the earliest signs are easy to dismiss as “just getting older.” Recognising them early gives you the best chance to slow the wear on your joint and stay active. Here are five signals worth paying attention to.

1. Stiffness after rest

A knee that feels stiff first thing in the morning, or after you have been sitting for a while, is one of the most common early clues. If it eases within about 30 minutes of moving around, it is often related to early joint changes.

2. A deep, aching pain with activity

Pain that appears when you climb stairs, squat, or walk longer distances — and settles with rest — suggests the cartilage cushioning your knee is starting to thin.

3. Swelling that comes and goes

Mild, on-and-off swelling around the joint after activity can mean the knee is becoming irritated. Persistent or hot, red swelling should always be checked promptly.

4. Grinding, clicking, or a “catching” feeling

A grinding sensation (crepitus) or the feeling that the knee occasionally catches or gives way can point to roughened joint surfaces.

5. Reduced range of movement

Finding it harder to fully straighten or bend the knee — or noticing you avoid certain movements — is a sign the joint is losing flexibility.

When to see a specialist

Early osteoarthritis responds well to guided exercise, weight management, and simple treatments. If any of these signs last more than a few weeks, an orthopaedic assessment with Dr. Udit Kapoor can confirm the cause and set out a plan to keep you moving comfortably.
